8 Amazing Experiences To Have In Cambridge, UK

As someone who’s lived in Cambridge for around 4 years and loves to explore, I have some places and things to recommend doing in Cambridge if you’re thinking of visiting. Even if you’re a Cambs local, I expect you to have tried all these otherwise you’re missing out!

Without further ado, here it goes:

Walk by the river Cam.

A stroll by the river Cam is always a special experience for me, especially on a sunny day. You could even stop to chill by one of the many Cambridge parks with a good book, have a picnic or play some tennis at Jesus Green tennis courts. Don’t forget your tennis rackets and balls though!

Go for a relaxing stroll at the Mill Road Cemetery.

I know what you may be thinking. Cemetery? Yes cemetery.

It’s the most relaxing place I’ve ever been to in Cambridge. Plus it makes you appreciate being alive and at the same time it reminds you that our time on earth is limited.

Going to Mill Road is also a plus because you could come across different shops, restaurants and people with different nationalities and this is one of the best things about Cambridge. It’s diversity and the different people you can encounter!

Go on a Dinky Door Scavenger Hunt.

Cambridge has this cool art concept called Dinky Doors which are mini art installations scattered throughout the city. I dare you to find all of them! So far, I’m aware that there are 14 doors however they keep adding more so keep an eye out on their website.

I’ve recently also recently learnt that there’s a Dinky Door Tour for the ones that want to learn more.

Have a fancy dinner at Fancett’s.

For me Fancett’s is the best restaurant in Cambridge which is a small french inspired bistro located on Mill Road. There’s a catch though. It’s not easy finding a table without a reservation so I recommend booking in advance. You’re welcome!

Walk around the city centre and admire the colleges.

It’s not a secret that Cambridge is famous for it’s university so make sure to spend some time in the centre admiring the colleges. My favourite building is King’s College which is difficult to miss. Whilst you’re in the city try and also spot the Cambridge Corpus Clock which features a Grasshopper ‘eating’ the time. Intrigued? An article on the Corpus Christi College website describes it as a ‘no ordinary clock’ that has a secret story. Read more here.

Try Punting.

Cambridge (and Oxford) are also well known for Punting, which is an experience that happens on the river and involves a punt (small boat), a pole and people looking to have a good time. Punting is such a unique experience that I think everyone should prioritise. You could even hire your own guide to learn more about punting and Cambridge.

Try Jack’s Gelato.

If you live in Cambridge you might know that there’s a debate around which ice cream is best between Jack’s Gelato and Aromi. Jack’s Gelato always wins for me because it has more unique ice cream flavours, the queues are always long (but move fast) and it’s just…better. I will let you decide. Whatever you do, have some ice cream when in Cambridge.

People watch with a glass of wine.

Finally, wine and people watching in Cambridge is a always a good idea. Grab a glass of wine at The Wine Merchants on Bridge street, find a cool spot and sip your chosen wine and just watch the world go by. You could even get a takeaway cup if you’d like to sit somewhere else in Cambridge!

Question of the week:

Have you even been to Cambridge and how did you find it?
