How I Try And Explore A New Destination Like A Local (And How You Can Do It Too)

Whenever I travel, I am interested in opportunities to meet the locals, try the local food, hear stories and immerse myself in the culture. I do believe that you can discover many things about yourself through other people. As humans we tend to seek novelty and we need new ideas and ways of thinking so what a better way to do that by seeing something new through traveling and exploring!

This week on Travel Tuesdays, I share with you a few things I do when I travel so I feel more like a local.

If exploring like a local is the way you like to travel, then keep on reading (also no shade to anyone that likes to explore like a tourist when travelling ha):

Pinterest Is Your Friend

When I am preparing for a trip (this usually happens very well in advance as I am NOT a last minute person) the first thing I do is go on Pinterest and I type in my travel destination. That does not last too long though, because sometimes the recommended results are very ‘touristy’ so I change my search to: Unique things to do at (enter destination), or local things to do at (enter destination).

Google Is Also Your Friend

I basically do the same thing I do with Pinterest but… on Google! I like finding local bloggers and seeing what they have to recommend.

Try The Local Food

Food is one of the first things on my mind when I travel. The best thing you can do (other than go on Instagram & Pinterest and drool over the amazing local food), is to book yourself a food tour! TripAdvisor is the best place to book a food tour in my opinion.

I have previously experienced a food tour in Barcelona and San Francisco and I had the best time! The food was amazing and we tried different markets, restaurants and cool spots. We also had our very own guide who answered any questions we had.

Plus I do remember that I was travelling solo at the time so it was nice to meet and interact with new people!

Try AirBnB Experiences

AirBnB is known for being a great source of travel accommodation. But did you know you can also find amazing experiences? Most of the experiences are run by locals so what a great way to meet someone that can tell you all about the place you’re visiting! AirBnB experiences is great for solo travellers as well because you get to meet new people and who knows, maybe you can find your new BFF.

I have previously used AirBnB experiences when I went for snorkelling in Bali and when I tried Kayaking surrounded by sea lions in Marina Del Ray, Los Angeles.

Spotted By Locals

This website is kind of cool because you can find tips from locals and find out their favourite spots.

Try Out Everyday Activities

Not many people think about this but I try and incorporate every day activities whenever I travel. I find that this is a great way of doing things that you love while being in a different environment. I don’t know…it’s just hits different!

Examples of some things I have done include:

  • Tried a Reformer Pilates Class in Santa Monica (LA)

  • Went to a local supermarket in LA, got some snacks and had a picnic at the beach

  • Tried a new fitness class in Bali

There you have it!

Happy Tuesday…
